A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
