British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
